Smart Folders in Mac OS X are an amazing thing. You can search for something — anything really — in Spotlight and save the search parameters as a folder. Whenever you open this folder, the search will be performed and and results will show up almost instantly. Great for when you need to find a specific set of files on a regular basis.

Now, what happens if you decide to put that Smart Folder into your Dock for extra-easy access combined with Stacks-goodness?

Nothing is what happens!

No stackage.

Folders in the Dock offer the Fan- and the Grid-view to quickly view and browse their contents. Smart Folders? Nope. Which blows. Yeah, performing the search might take a few seconds, maybe even longer, but I don’t think that’s a very good point. The preview could be updated with the results as they appear. Having something in the Dock that almost looks like a folder and easily could but does not behave like one, is inconsistent and ugly.

Well, maybe 10.7 will undo this hate-crime against… well, something, definitely.
